Fall 2022 HSIP – Monday, September 19th Update for Applicants:

Thank you to all students who applied to our Fall 2022 Health Science Immersion Program. We received a large number of applications during the final several days of the recruitment period. We know several high schools were only able to share the program in the final days of the recruitment period, and decided to extend an application grace period until the evening of Wednesday, September 21st so all students have a fair chance to apply. Throughout Monday, September 19th and Tuesday, September 20th we will be working to send out acceptance emails to as many students as possible. Afterward, later in the week we may take additional students off the waiting list. Application decisions are largely based on the number of spaces available with high school seniors given higher priority because this could be their last chance to enroll in the program. We highly encourage students who do not hear back from us to reapply for the program in the future and we will run additional sessions of the program in Spring 2023.

Over the course of your nine Saturday afternoons at HSIP, you will be exposed to numerous aspects of the health sciences field and how academics, practitioners and students operate within it. From engaging with accomplished university professors during lectures, to learning about the experience of being a graduate student— your Fall will challenge you to consider your future academic, career and personal goals while also gaining firsthand exposure to the health sciences. The 7 page program snapshot below gives an overview of HSIP’s structure and several days from our curriculum.

Practitioner Speakerships

HSIP will always feature a number of hands-on lectures delivered by research professors as well as graduate students from academic institutions including UCLA, UCSF and Cal State LA. The speaker curriculum covers a wide variety of topics in the health sciences and there will always be an opportunity for questions at the end of presentations.

Career Pathways

Students will hear directly from health professionals as well as professors who have served as career advisors, to learn about the specifics of different positions in the health sciences field. This personal exposure will be further complimented through a personality test that will help students understand their individual strengths as well as what type of positions they would likely be most satisfied with in the classroom and workplace.

College Admissions

HSIP is designed to help students formulate their personal goals and connect these to their plans for college. The program will feature workshops on how to formulate your goals and then present these to others. The college admission workshop will then cover the CSU/UC systems as well as private universities. A goal of the program is to help students develop their extracurricular and personal backgrounds for college applications, while also learning how to effectively explore their goals once they are in college.

Students will be assigned into 4-5 person cohorts focused on one of three topics (neuroscience, human anatomy and cancer research). Over the course of the week each team will read and discuss several academic articles related to the subject. At the end of the week, the cohort will deliver a brief group presentation about their research topic. The cohorts will also hold group discussions facilitated by a staff member assigned to each cohort.

Fall 2022 HSIP Program Snapshot

Fall 2022 HSIP is our eleventh season running our Health Sciences Immersion Program curriculum after completing 23 sessions in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. In July 2019 we ran two separate sessions of the program for 50 Southern CA high school students at Cal State LA’s university campus. In Fall 2019, we ran our third session of HSIP at the USC Health Sciences campus on Saturday afternoons with 30 students. In Spring 2020, we ran the fourth and fifth sessions of HSIP again at the USC Health Sciences campus with 70 students. During Summer 2020, we ran 4 sessions of HSIP on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and worked with over 160 students in the first Zoom version of HSIP. During Fall 2020, another 85 students enrolled in the two Fall Zoom sessions of HSIP. During 2021, over 270 additional students enrolled in HSIP through the two Spring Saturday sessions, four Summer Saturday/Sunday sessions and two Fall Saturday sessions of the virtual program. During Spring and Summer 2022 an additional 175 students enrolled in HSIP. Over the past three years over 820 students have gone an introduction to the health sciences field through HSIP! You can see our 2019 program session cohorts here. You can also see how our Summer 2019 HSIP looked like in the video below.

How Will Fall 2022 HSIP Take Place on Zoom?

Since Summer 2020, we have held eighteen sessions of our Health Science Immersion Program through Zoom in a virtual format. We have found the experience to be immersive and engaging for students, while also increasing accessibility to the program greatly. We want to ensure that students are ready to make full use of the virtual tools in Zoom to foster a high level of student collaboration with staff members, speakers and fellow students.

On the late afternoon of September 22nd (Session A) and September 23rd (Session B) before the Fall HSIP start date, HSIP staff members will hold short Zoom meetings with all program cohort groups (4-5 students each) separately. This will give every student the chance to strongly connect with staff members before the program starts, as well as to introduce students to the various tools of the Zoom software that will be using throughout the 9 weeks of Fall HSIP. These tools include key functions such as screen sharing, breakout rooms as well as digital polls that will enable the online program to be engaging and hands-on. During the orientation activities on Week One (September 24th) staff members will deliver an introductory powerpoint presentation covering the fundamental structure of the program. Icebreaker activities will then take place, followed by our first speaker presentation. By the end of the first week, we believe that students will have a firm grasp of how to use the Zoom software for the remainder of the program.
