Power Ranking All 50 States by Their College Football Teams (2023)

Power Ranking All 50 States by Their College Football Teams

0 of 42

When it comes to college football, not all states are created equal. There are 125 FBS college football teams scattered throughout the country, but what state has the best college football heading into the 2013 season?

There are a few states not even fortunate enough to have a college football team, while there are plenty of schools with multiple teams.

The college football offseason can bring about a variety of topics, with bragging rights at stake all over the place.

Why not bring the teams in each state together for the right to talk some trash?

Here is a ranking of all 50 states based on their 2013 college football teams.

*Number of schools in a state does not necessarily help or hurt ranking

No. 50 Multiple States

1 of 42

There are nine states that do not have FBS programs, so all of those states will be tied at No. 50 overall.

    -New Hampshire

    -North Dakota

    -Rhode Island

    -South Dakota

No. 41 Hawaii

2 of 42

    Team: Hawaii Warriors

Starting off the list is the great state of Hawaii. The Warriors are the only team from the state and only won three games last season.

Head coach Norm Chow has not done the job most were expecting out of him when he took over.

It doesn't get much worse than the state of Hawaii right now.

No. 40 New Mexico

3 of 42

Teams: New Mexico Lobos, New Mexico State Aggies

Even though some states only have one team, the compilation of the two from New Mexico put it near the bottom of the list.

The Lobos did win four games last season but have been awful in recent years and do not appear to be much of a threat this season.

New Mexico State, on the other hand, was downright awful, going 1-11 overall and 0-6 in the WAC.

No. 39 Wyoming

4 of 42

    Team: Wyoming Cowboys

Even though the Cowboys are the only team from the state of Wyoming, they get the slight edge over New Mexico.

Wyoming only won four games last season but has had some talented teams in years past and should finish in the middle of the pack in the Mountain West.

No. 38 Connecticut

5 of 42

    Team: Connecticut Huskies

Connecticut was not as good last season as it had been in past years, and the 2013 season might be much of the same.

The conference will be much easier, so the Huskies might be able to improve on the 5-7 season the team had in 2012.

Either way, this is not a proud college football state by any stretch of the imagination.

No. 37 Massachusetts

6 of 42

Teams: Boston College Eagles, Massachusetts Minutemen

This is a state that would have been much higher on the list a few years ago, but the struggles of Boston College drop it down near the bottom.

The Eagles went 2-10 a season ago but should be much better under new head coach Steve Addazio.

Massachusetts is relatively new to the FBS level. The Minutemen only won a single game last season but should be much improved in the coming years.

No. 36 Maryland

7 of 42

    Teams: Maryland Terrapins, Navy Midshipmen

It might be a few years before Maryland is putting together winning seasons, but this team is headed in the right direction under Randy Edsall.

The Terrapins only won four games last season and might be able to improve on that in 2013.

Navy was 8-5 last year but has some talent to replace. The Midshipmen should still be on the cusp of a bowl game once again.

No. 35 Minnesota

8 of 42

(Video) College Football Rankings LIVE – Top 25 Teams In 2nd College Football Playoff Rankings For 2022

    Team: Minnesota Golden Gophers

Even though Minnesota qualified for a bowl game last season, the Golden Gophers might not be quite as good this coming season.

They are the only team from the state of Minnesota and have been one of the bottom-feeders in the Big Ten for the better part of the past decade.

No. 34 West Virginia

9 of 42

Teams: West Virginia Mountaineers, Marshall Thundering Herd

Just a few years ago, this state would have been much higher, but given how much the Mountaineers struggled last season and the fact that they will likely be even worse this season, the West Virginia teams rank much lower.

The Mountaineers lost a lot of talent from a team that only won seven games a year ago.

Marshall, on the other hand, has been irrelevant for quite some time but did manage to win five games last season.

No. 33 Washington

10 of 42

Teams: Washington Huskies, Washington State Cougars

While the Huskies have certainly held up their fair share of the pie in recent years, the Cougars most certainly have not.

Washington did win seven games last season and will likely be even better in 2013. Washington State, on the other hand, only totaled three wins and continues to finish near the bottom of the Pac-12 every season.

There is a whole lot of potential with this state.

No. 32 New York

11 of 42

Teams: Syracuse Orange, Army Black Knights, Buffalo Bulls

With the exception of Syracuse, the other two teams in the state have been awful the past few seasons.

Syracuse went 8-5 last year, and even though there is a lot to replace, including quarterback Ryan Nassib, this team should be good enough to be in the bowl conversation.

Buffalo was improved last year, winning four games, and Army was as bad as it has been in quite some time, only putting together two victories.

No question, this is the worst state with three or more teams.

No. 31 Missouri

12 of 42

    Team: Missouri Tigers

Surprisingly, there is only one team from the state of Missouri.

The Tigers struggled last season during their first in the SEC. A 5-7 year is not what this team is used to, but it should be improved in 2013.

Look for this team to get back into the bowl picture if it can stay healthy this year.

No. 30 Colorado

13 of 42

Teams: Colorado Buffaloes, Colorado State Rams, Air Force Falcons

With three teams, the state of Colorado cracks the top 30.

Even though none of these three teams had a winning season in 2012, the Falcons did qualify for a bowl game.

Colorado only won one game but will be slightly improved this season.

Colorado State put together four wins and appears to be in a similar position this year.

No. 29 Iowa

14 of 42

Teams: Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones

These are two average teams that appear headed for the middle of their respective conferences.

Even though Iowa only won four games last season, the Hawkeyes have a chance to bounce back in 2013 with better play from the quarterback position.

Iowa State has a ton of talent to replace, but head coach Paul Rhoads has done an excellent job so far with this team. Look for the Cyclones to be right on the cusp of a third consecutive bowl appearance.

No. 28 New Jersey

15 of 42

    Team: Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Rutgers won nine games last season, but with a lot of lost talent on defense and the early departure of running back Jawan Jamison, this team might not be as good in 2013.

Good news for the Scarlet Knights is the conference is going to be very weak with some very winnable games.

This should easily be an eight- or nine-win team once again this year.

No. 27 Nevada

16 of 42

Teams: Nevada Wolf Pack, UNLV Rebels

Nevada has been an excellent football program, particularly in recent years under the leadership of head coach Chris Ault. Ault now has a field named after him and is still coaching.

The Wolf Pack won seven games last season and should be a factor once again this season in the Mountain West.

UNLV, on the other hand, has not been nearly as good, only winning two games a season ago.

No. 26 Virginia

17 of 42

Teams: Virginia Cavaliers, Virginia Tech Hokies

(Video) Ranking EVERY College Football Team!! || Tier List 2022

Both of these teams were down last season, but look for some improvements in 2013.

The Hokies still managed seven wins and a bowl victory. The return of quarterback Logan Thomas should help immensely, particularly if he can have the season he did as a sophomore.

Virginia, however, struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball. Look for that to continue this season, but there should be enough on defense to improve from the four wins it posted a season ago.

No. 25 Kansas

18 of 42

Teams: Kansas State Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks

The combination of the Wildcats and Jayhawks virtually even out as they are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Kansas only won one game a season ago, and even though there is an influx of junior-college players coming in, it is hard to imagine this squad winning more than a couple of games.

Kansas State was excellent last season, playing in the Fiesta Bowl, but the loss of quarterback Collin Klein is going to hurt in 2013.

No. 24 Nebraska

19 of 42

    Team: Nebraska Cornhuskers

Even though there is only one team from the state of Nebraska, it ranks so high due to the potential of the Cornhuskers this season.

Nebraska has some explosive players on the offensive side of the ball, and quarterback Taylor Martinez is returning for his senior season.

This team should be a factor in the Big Ten and one of the top 25 teams in the country this season.

No. 23 Wisconsin

20 of 42

    Team: Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin is also the only team in its state, but this is a squad that has a chance to contend for the Big Ten title in 2013.

The Badgers should once again have a very strong running game and a solid defense.

The last state with only one FBS team is Wisconsin, and the Badgers easily crack the top 25.

No. 22 Idaho

21 of 42

Teams: Boise State Broncos, Idaho Vandals

Even though Boise State has been one of the best teams in the country in recent years, Idaho is a little lower on the list than some might think because of the Vandals.

The success of the Broncos has been offset by the Vandals, as Idaho only won one game last season.

It should be another top-25 year and a double-digit win season for Boise State in 2013 and another double-digit loss season for Idaho.

No. 21 Mississippi

22 of 42

Teams: Ole Miss Rebels, Mississippi State Bulldogs, Southern Miss Golden Eagles

This is a state that might be much higher on the list a few years from now, but as it stands, Mississippi is just outside of the top 20.

Southern Miss went 0-12 last season, so that does not help. Needless to say, it couldn't get any worse.

Ole Miss, on the other hand, is a team on the rise. The Rebels won seven games last season and put together quite a recruiting class.

Mississippi State is another squad that appears headed in the right direction. The Bulldogs won eight games last season under head coach Dan Mullen.

No. 20 Pennsylvania

23 of 42

Teams: Penn State Nittany Lions, Pittsburgh Panthers, Temple Owls

This is a state that might not be as strong this season as it was last year.

Pittsburgh is likely to take a step back from the bowl team it featured in 2012. The Panthers lost a lot of skill position players and might be rebuilding in 2013.

Temple did win four games last year, but the Owls also have some question marks surrounding the running game.

Penn State managed to win eight games last season, and it is hard to imagine the Nittany Lions duplicating that feat in 2013.

No. 19 Arkansas

24 of 42

Teams: Arkansas Razorbacks, Arkansas State Red Wolves

Arkansas had a down year in 2012 but should return to bowl form as early as this season.

What helps this state reach the top 20 is the fact that Arkansas State has been excellent in recent years, including 2012.

The Red Wolves won 10 games a year ago and should be a factor once again in the Sun Belt.

No. 18 Arizona

25 of 42

Teams: Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils

Both of these teams won eight games last season, en route to bowl campaigns.

This season, expect both teams to be around the eight-win level once again.

They will both likely be middle of the pack in the Pac-12, but both programs are headed in the right direction.

This is a state that could be higher on the list a few years from now.

No. 17 Alabama

26 of 42

(Video) 2022 Week 11 College Football Rankings

Teams: Alabama Crimson Tide, UAB Blazers, South Alabama Jaguars, Auburn Tigers, Troy Trojans

Many people might have expected this state to be higher, but with the exception of the Crimson Tide, this state is as bad as it gets.

The other four schools only combined for 13 wins last season.

A few years from now, if Auburn can recover it might be a different story, but as of right now, this is a state that has some teams with room to improve.

No. 16 North Carolina

27 of 42

Teams: Duke Blue Devils, North Carolina Tar Heels, East Carolina Pirates, North Carolina State Wolfpack, Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The state of North Carolina is a combination of five teams that are average to slightly above average.

No team from the state lost more than seven games last season, but no team won more than eight games.

North Carolina should be solid once again in 2013, but it is hard to imagine Duke winning as many games as it did last year.

Wake Forest and North Carolina State should be middle-of-the-pack teams in the ACC once again.

No. 15 Indiana

28 of 42

Teams: Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Purdue Boilermakers, Indiana Hoosiers, Ball State Cardinals

This state could be a lot higher if Indiana and Purdue ever get their acts together, but as it stands right now, it is just inside the top 15.

Notre Dame is certainly the class of this state, and Ball State is another team to keep an eye on in 2013.

The Cardinals won seven games last year, qualifying for a bowl game.

Notre Dame should be one of the top 20 teams in the country this season, and Purdue is also a squad that will be improved from a year ago.

No. 14 Utah

29 of 42

Teams: Utah Utes, Utah State Aggies, BYU Cougars

The state of Utah has been surprisingly good at football in recent years, led by BYU and Utah State.

The Cougars won eight games last season, but that total was topped by a Utah State team that went 11-2, led by quarterback Chuckie Keeton.

Utah, meanwhile, has had a few down seasons, but the Utes should be a little better in 2013 if they can stay healthy.

No. 13 Georgia

30 of 42

Teams: Georgia Bulldogs, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Georgia State Panthers

Georgia is likely to be one of the top teams in the country this season, and the Bulldogs should once again be a factor in the SEC.

Georgia Tech was 7-7 a season ago and should be around that same mark this year.

What is not really helping the state is the newest FBS member Georgia State. The Panthers will be entering their first season playing with the big boys.

No. 12 Kentucky

31 of 42

Teams: Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

This is a state that is without question on the rise. Louisville proved it is one of the top 10 teams in the country heading into this season.

Kentucky only won two games a year ago, but new head coach Mark Stoops will make the Wildcats a factor in the coming years and should improve on last season's win total.

Western Kentucky is another solid program that won seven games a season ago and qualified for a bowl game.

No. 11 Illinois

32 of 42

Teams: Northern Illinois Huskies, Illinois Fighting Illini, Northwestern Wildcats

The emergence of teams such as Northwestern and Northern Illinois allows this state to nearly crack the top 10.

Northwestern posted 10 wins last season and should be right around that level once again in 2013.

Northern Illinois won 12 games last season, including qualifying for the Orange Bowl. While it is hard to imagine that type of season in 2013, quarterback Jordan Lynch will return for his senior season.

Illinois has been awful in recent years, and it might be some time before this team gets it back on track, after finishing last season 2-10.

No. 10 Michigan

33 of 42

Teams: Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Central Michigan Chippewas, Eastern Michigan Eagles, Western Michigan Broncos

This is a state that might be a little higher on the list, but with the struggles of Michigan State this past season and the fact that the three MAC schools are non-factors, it comes in at No. 10.

Michigan should be one of the top 15 teams in the country this season, but it is hard to tell whether or not the rest of the teams will be any better this year.

Central Michigan did manage seven wins and a bowl appearance last season, but Eastern Michigan only won two games and Western Michigan put together four victories.

This is a state that has the potential to go up or down a good deal after this season.

No. 9 Tennessee

34 of 42

Teams: Memphis Tigers, Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, Vanderbilt Commodores, Tennessee Volunteers

If Tennessee can pick up the pace a little bit, this is a state that could climb even higher.

The success of the Vanderbilt program over the years is certainly something to keep an eye on.

Without question, the key to this state is whether or not Tennessee can return to old form. If that happens, this could turn into an excellent football state.

One team to keep an eye on is Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders won eight games last season and are solid year in and year out.

(Video) College Football Playoff Rankings Reaction: Who will be the new number one in college football?

The Memphis Tigers, though, only won four games a season ago.

No. 8 Louisiana

35 of 42

Teams: LSU Tigers, Tulane Green Wave, LouisianaMonroe Warhawks, LouisianaLafayette Ragin' Cajuns, Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

Even though most people only recognize LSU in this group, the other schools have been very successful in recent years and should be once again in 2013.

Louisiana Tech won nine games last year and was ranked for the better part of the season. It might be a challenge to repeat that success, as former head coach Sonny Dykes left to take over at Cal.

Both UL Monroe and UL Lafayette qualified for bowl games last season, winning eight and nine games, respectively. The Cajuns won their bowl game vs. ECU.

Tulane is a different story, as the Green Wave went 2-10 in 2013.

No. 7 Oregon

36 of 42

Teams: Oregon State Beavers, Oregon Ducks

Even though there are only two teams hailing from the state of Oregon, it is so high on the list because of just how good those two teams are.

Oregon will once again be knocking on the door of playing in the national championship game, and Oregon State could be a team that is near the top of the Pac-12.

The two combined for a 21-5 record in 2012 and should be just as good this season.

No. 6 Oklahoma

37 of 42

Teams: Oklahoma Sooners, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Not many states have three teams as good as the three hailing from the state of Oklahoma.

The Sooners are one of the top teams in the nation every year, and they won 10 games a season ago.

Oklahoma State is a program on the rise. The Cowboys managed to win eight games last year and should be better in 2013.

Tulsa is also an interesting squad. The Golden Hurricane went 11-3 last year and will be excellent once again this season.

The emergence of Tulsa allows the state of Oklahoma to nearly jump into the top five.

No. 5 South Carolina

38 of 42

Teams: South Carolina Gamecocks, Clemson Tigers

Even though there are only two FBS teams from South Carolina, that does not stop this state from cracking the top five.

South Carolina and Clemson are both perennial powers and will be hovering around the top 10 when the season opens. There is a chance that these two teams could be near the top of the country all year long.

No. 4 Florida

39 of 42

Teams: Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, South Florida Bulls, Central Florida Knights, Florida Atlantic Owls, Florida State Seminoles, Florida International Panthers

The state of Florida has always been known for its excellent football, and the success of Miami plays a large part in that.

The Hurricanes won seven games last year, and if they are even better, the state of Florida could move up higher on the list.

The Florida Gators are a perennial top-10 team, and Central Florida has been on the rise in recent years.

Everybody knows about the success of Florida State in recent years as the Seminoles have returned to prominence on a national stage.

The combination of the other three schools only managed three wins each, bringing Florida down a notch or two.

No. 3 Ohio

40 of 42

Teams: Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bearcats, Ohio Bobcats, Kent State Golden Flashes, Akron Zips, Toledo Rockets, Miami Redhawks, Bowling Green Falcons

Ohio is a state that is filled with talented football teams, and last season was a perfect example of that.

In addition to Ohio State going undefeated, Kent State went 11-3, Cincinnati finished 10-3, and Toledo went 9-4.

The Ohio Bobcats also won nine games, and Bowling Green finished the year with eight victories.

No other state could boast six teams with anywhere close to that success.

It is hard to find better college football than the state of Ohio's teams.

No. 2 California

41 of 42

Teams: Stanford Cardinal, UCLA Bruins, California Golden Bears, USC Trojans, Fresno State Bulldogs, San Diego State Aztecs, San Jose State Spartans

The state of California is loaded with college football talent, and that will certainly be the case in 2013.

Led by the Stanford Cardinal, this state has some excellent football programs. Stanford should be one of the top 10 teams in the country once again this season.

USC is always one of the most talented teams in the nation, and California will be much improved in 2013 after finishing 3-9 a year ago.

UCLA won seven games last season and has the personnel to do that once again in 2013.

What helps to sets this state apart from some of the others is the smaller programs. Teams like Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State all won at least nine games a season ago.

No. 1 Texas

42 of 42

Teams: Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Rice Owls, Houston Cougars, UTSA Roadrunners, SMU Mustangs, Baylor Bears, UTEP Miners, North Texas Mean Green, Texas State Bobcats

There are too many schools in the state of Texas to even mention them all. With 12 FBS programs, Texas easily tops the list.

The reason they are No. 1 is not the amount of teams, but the talent on those teams throughout the state.

Texas A&M will be one of the top 10 teams in the country this season. Both Texas and TCU will once again be top-20-caliber teams.

(Video) 10 College Teams That SOMEHOW Always Produce The BEST NFL Talent...

Throw in Texas Tech and Baylor, and this state has a ton of football talent.

While many of the little schools have struggled in recent years, there is no question that Texas is at the top of the list.
